Values in Action: Intergenerational Learning Programme with Seniors by Swimming Academy
Written by:
Isaac Chua (Secondary 4, Swimming Academy)
As part of the Swimming Academy’s Values in Action initiative, our student-athletes took part in the Intergenerational Learning Programme (ILP), conducted in collaboration with Fei Yue Community Services. This meaningful programme aimed to foster intergenerational bonds by giving student-athletes the opportunity to engage with seniors, sharing the history and achievements of our school, while also gaining rare insights into the lived experiences of the older generation.
Despite some initial shyness, our student-athletes quickly adapted and made a genuine effort to ensure their visitors felt welcome. With better preparation and a deeper understanding of the seniors' needs, the second session saw even stronger engagement and more heartfelt interactions.
The programme was a resounding success. Our student-athletes made a conscious effort to include the seniors in every activity, creating a warm, inclusive environment. Many reflected that the experience gave them a deep sense of fulfilment, knowing they had brought joy to the seniors, even if only for a few hours.
Through this experience, student-athletes learned that small acts of kindness can have a powerful impact. The ILP not only nurtured empathy and communication skills but also created lasting memories for both students and seniors alike.
