Even as Singapore Sports School started operations in 2004, pioneer principal, Mr Moo Soon Chong, and senior management realised that a conventional secondary school setup cannot be optimal for the development of student-athletes with the aspiration and potential to represent Singapore on the world stage.
In a conventional secondary school, there is the need to prepare for the national examinations and sport training typically take a back seat at least six months ahead of the national examinations. This is the time, at 16 and 17 years old, when student-athletes are just beginning to develop into sport champions.
To leverage on this sport development opportunity, Sports School created through-train pathways, bypassing the national examinations and leading to a post-secondary education.
The Sports School currently offers four post-secondary through-train pathways: International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, with an option of the Extended programme; customised Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management; and customised Diploma in Business Studies.
