Chen Xingtong made history as the first Singaporean to reach the final of the US Girls’ Junior Championship, held at Atlanta Athletic Club from 14 to 19 July 2025. The 16-year-old golfer from IBDP, Year 5, booked her berth at the US Girls’ Junior Championship after winning a qualifying event in June, joining compatriot Guo Junxi, who had already earned her place through a top-two finish at an earlier competition. The competition is highly prestigious and well-regarded as a stepping stone for many of the world’s top players.

In Georgia, Xingtong advanced to the 36-hole championship match after a remarkable semifinal victory over top seed Grace Carter. Despite a valiant effort, Xingtong was narrowly defeated 2 and 1 by Canada's Aphrodite Deng in the final.

Throughout the tournament, Xingtong showcased resilience and skill, including a pivotal birdie on the 18th hole in the semifinals to secure her place in the final. Her performance not only elevated her confidence but also earned her exemptions into the upcoming US Women's Amateur Championship. Despite earning a spot in the US Women’s Amateur Championships, she will not be participating in it due to scheduling conflicts.

Speaking to The Straits Times, Xingtong reflected, “Definitely saw a lot of positives out there. Just being able to keep my focus and my spirit throughout these 35 holes, and just not giving up, even though I was like four down.”

She added, “There were a lot of positives and I’ve been able to figure out some of my weaknesses as well.”

Her breakthrough performance at the US Girls’ Junior Championship is a landmark achievement for Singapore golf and highlights the rising potential of young athletes on the international stage. It adds to her growing list of accolades, which includes becoming the youngest player to win the women’s title at the 2024 Singapore Open Amateur Championships at just 15 years old. Xingtong was also awarded the Moo Soon Chong Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year at the 21st Awards Night this year for her remarkable achievements in 2024.

Meanwhile, fellow student-athlete Denise Ng Wan Xin also made her mark overseas. After finishing fourth at a qualifier in Hawaii in June, she earned a spot at the prestigious Junior World Championship in San Diego, where she tied for 32nd out of 167 players. Prior to that, she competed in the North & South Junior Championship from 29 June to 2 July, tying for fifth place out of 89 competitors.

Reflecting on her month-long US competition tour, Denise said, “It was a great experience competing with many international players as well as competing at an iconic golf course.”
