Making A Big Splash On Home Waters

World Aquatics Championships 2025

The World Aquatics Championships 2025 brought together the finest talents in aquatics, all vying for medals and personal breakthroughs in their respective events. Held from 11 July 2025, the Championships featured intense competition across Water Polo, Artistic Swimming, Diving, and Swimming.

The action began with the Water Polo matches. Alumnus Goh Wen Zhe and current student-athletes Justin Saik and Matthias Goh were featured in the Men’s team, while Charlene Tio, Loh Yu Xuan, and alumna Celeste Wan represented the Women’s team. Competing in front of a home crowd was a unique and inspiring experience for the student-athletes.

The spotlight then turned to Artistic Swimming. A strong contingent of past and present Sports School athletes made up two-thirds of Team Singapore’s squad. These included Caitlyn Tan, Claire Tan, Debbie Soh, Rachel Thean, Rae-Ann Ong, and Yvette Chong, who delivered graceful yet gritty performances. Notably, Debbie and Yvette achieved a personal best in the Duet Free event.

Our Open Water swimmers also had their moment. When the starting horn finally sounded after two postponements, the stage was set not just for a race, but for a battle of heart, heat, and home pride. Alumni Artyom Lukasevits and Ritchie Oh dove into the Men’s 10km Open Water event at the World Aquatics Championships Singapore 2025, with the cheers of local supporters behind them and scorching conditions ahead.

With water temperatures soaring to a punishing 30.4°C and strong currents churning the course, the race quickly turned into a battle of mental and physical strength. 11 swimmers failed to finish, including Ritchie, who was forced to withdraw due to dehydration. Artyom pushed through the brutal heat and physical toll, crossing the line in 2:11:41.40 to place 43rd and finish as the top Southeast Asian. Meanwhile, in the Diving events, current student-athletes Max Lee and Clara Liaw, and past student-athletes Fong Kay Yian, Avvir Tham, and Yim Shek Yen showcased their skills as they competed against some of the world’s top divers.
