Golden Strikes Dominate The Asian Youth Bowling Championships

Bowling: Asian Youth Championships

From 20 to 27 August 2025, the finest youth bowlers from around the Asian region gathered at Sunway Mega Lanes in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to smash pinfalls and prove to themselves who would emerge top bowlers. Team Singapore’s youth bowlers took on the challenge and made history at the 22nd Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championships in Malaysia with a performance that has set a new benchmark for the nation.

Leading the pinfalls down the lanes was Hazel Tan Wei Ning, who secured gold in the Girls’ Singles, ending a 40-year wait for Singapore since 1985. She then joined forces with Lim Shi En and Nur Irdina Hazly to claim gold in the Girls’ Doubles, marking Singapore’s first doubles victory since 2010.

Hazel shared, "It feels surreal to finally bring home a gold medal in the girls’ singles after such a long wait for Singapore. Throughout the competition, I focused on executing what I’d been training for over the past two months. The long oil pattern was a real challenge, but it showed me where I need to improve, and I’ll definitely work on that moving forward." She continued, "The preparation really paid off, especially with the adjustments I made to my physical game, like my sparing, and having the right equipment gave me the confidence to make strong shots. I’m also grateful to my coach, who reminded me to focus on what I can control and trust the ball to do the work. As a team, I think we put in a stellar performance. Winning both the girls’ overall and overall country champion titles shows how much effort we poured into this, and I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved together."

The momentum continued in the Girls’ Team event, where Hazel, Shi En, Irdina, and alumna Shirlene Wong Xue Lin dominated the lanes to secure another gold. Shi En went on to add an individual gold in the Girls’ All-Events, with Shirlene clinching the silver. Shirlene also finished strong with another bronze in the Girls’ Masters.

Brian Ngoi racked up 2,507 pinfalls with teammate Aiman Lim to also take sixth place in the boys’ doubles.

Capping off an incredible championship, Team Singapore proudly took home a total of 6 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals. Of which, our bowlers stand proud having contributed 4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals. These led to them winning the titles of Overall Girls’ Team Champions and Overall Country Champions, solidifying its standing as one of Asia’s bowling powerhouses.
