Wushu Exponents Named Sportswoman Of The Year And Sportsgirl Of The Year
Singapore Sports Awards 2025
It was a night of celebration and pride as past and present student-athletes from Singapore Sports School took centre stage at the Singapore Sports Awards 2025, with several clinching top honours for their exceptional achievements on the international stage.
Wushu exponent and recent alumna Zeanne Law was named Sportswoman of the Year, marking her first win in the senior category after earning the Sportsgirl of the Year title in 2024. The spexScholar and spexEducation Undergraduate scholarship recipient enjoyed a stellar season, striking gold in both Women’s Taijiquan and Optional Taijishan at the World Taijiquan Championships, and adding another gold at the Asian Wushu Championships.
In an interview with The Straits Times, she shared, “In Wushu Taiji, I used to focus on how appealing my movements looked. But now, I focus more on the significance and intentions behind them – and that has taught me to make every step count, both in sport and in life.” Zeanne did not attend the awards ceremony as she was in Yunnan, China, preparing for the Taolu Asian Cup Championships. Bowler Daphne Tan Shi Jing was a contender for the same category.
Likewise, Charlotte Ng, the newly crowned Sportsgirl of the Year, was not in Singapore during the awards ceremony. However, the second-year Diploma in Business student-athlete felt gratitude for being recognised and for celebrating her win as a World Junior Champions at the last World Junior Championships.
There were three finalists from Sports School for the Sportsman of the Year award, namely shuttler Loh Kean Yew, pencak silat exponent Sheik Farhan Sheik Alau’ddin and wushu exponent Jowen Lim Si Wei. Among the 5 finalists, Olympian Max Maeder won the top honours for his Olympic achievement in 2024.
Diver Max Lee Shen Oon earned the Sportsboy/Sportsgirl Team of the Year (Event) award alongside his partner Ayden Ng Geng Wee, following their gold medal triumph in the 3m Springboard Synchro Men’s event at the 11th Asian Diving Championships. Swimmers Azlina Mastamam and Ian Leong Wei Sheng were also nominated in the same category for their performance as part of the 4 x 1500m Relay Open Water Team at the 2nd SEA Open Water Swimming Championships.
In the team categories, Sports School alumni made their presence felt. Faithmaria Ifeoma McKevin Lawrence, Jenine Ang, Tan Yi Jie, and Khor Ting Fan were part of the netball team that emerged victorious as Team of the Year (Team Sport).
The Bowling Men’s Team, featuring Darren Ong Wei Siong, Muhammad Jaris Goh Ali Akbar Goh, and Nu’man Syahmi Yusri, secured Team of the Year (Event) for their outstanding performance at the 2024 Asian Bowling Championships. The Women’s Air Rifle Team with alumni Fernel Tan Qian Ni and Martina Veloso, and the Table Tennis Men’s Doubles Team comprising current student-athlete Izaac Quek and alumnus Koen Pang Yew En, were also finalists in the Team of the Year (Event).
Several other Sports School athletes were also among the finalists in key award categories, and many more received the Meritorious Award, which recognises sporting excellence at both national and international levels.
The event, held on 20 June 2025, was organised by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) and Sport Singapore, and was attended by SNOC president and Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Ms Grace Fu, and Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Mr David Neo.
