Fighting Spirit Brings Winning Results
Ju-Jitsu: 10th Asian Youth Ju-Jitsu Championships
Secondary 3 student-athlete Audrey Fan Rui Zi and Secondary 2 student-athlete Caleb Liao Yongde proved they are among Asia's rising ju-jitsu talents after clinching medals at the 10th Asian Youth Ju-Jitsu Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan, held from 13 to 19 July 2026.
Audrey became Team Singapore's only silver medallist after an impressive campaign in the Under-16 Fighting System (-48kg) event. She emerged with silver after three intense bouts against some of the region's best young athletes.
Reflecting on her performance, Audrey said, “The biggest challenge was staying mentally focused throughout each match, adapting to my opponents' different fighting styles while keeping myself calm and in control.
Overall, I won two matches and lost one. Every bout was a solid test of endurance and tactical execution. Facing top competitors in the region really highlighted what I need to refine before my potential rematches at the upcoming 2026 JJIF World Championships Youth.
Moving forward, I’m focused on building on this win — sharpening my techniques, addressing the takeaways from my matches, and preparing for upcoming national and international competitions.”
Caleb's bronze medal in the Under-16 Fighting Male (-48kg) category was the culmination of an inspiring comeback. He had fractured his collarbone, forcing him to miss five months of training. The lengthy rehabilitation tested him physically and mentally, but he persevered through the setbacks to return to competition and earn a place on the podium.
"I think that with the right support from those around me, I have improved by leaps and bounds," said Caleb.
"The demanding training from my coaches and training partners, Aidan Tan and Mendel Tan, has constantly pushed me beyond my limits. My short-term goal is to continue winning medals at the youth level, especially at the World Championships. Looking further ahead, I aspire to qualify for the 2036 Olympic Games and continue representing Singapore on the biggest stage," he shared.
