Soumya and Umair Roar to the Top at OBS
ROAR Awards – September 2026
The toughest challenges are not always the ones that test physical strength. Sometimes, they are the moments that call for clear communication, quick thinking and the ability to work together.
At the Secondary 1 Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) camp, gymnast Soumya Wong Yi Xuan and footballer Syed Umair Ahmad showed exactly these qualities. Their critical and adaptive thinking, communication, collaboration and information skills saw them emerge as Best Overall Female Camper and Best Overall Male Camper respectively.
The pair were recognised with the ROAR Award, celebrating their ability to step up, work with others and adapt to the demands of the camp. Soumya and Umair also stood out as positive role models among their peers.
The camp also brought out the resilience of many other student-athletes. During the assembly on 17 September 2026, Elice Quek An Yu, Fong See Yong, Janice Zhuang Qixuan, Jess Lim Yan Xuan, Jeyes Tay, Kaleb Ko Yamaguchi Lee Chun Keat, Kendrix Kam Jing Yang, Lian Mickey Barker, Rae Anne Ng and Nur Stella Madarina were applauded for demonstrating resilience throughout the camp.
These lessons extend far beyond OBS. The ability to adapt when plans change, communicate clearly under pressure and work effectively with others can make a difference both on and off the field. For these Secondary 1 student-athletes, OBS offered an early opportunity to put those qualities into action.
