Lessons Beyond the Light Switch

Total Defence Day

When the lights went out, learning did not.

As part of our school’s Total Defence exercise, student-athletes and staff experienced a simulated power disruption during curriculum time. Classrooms operated without electricity, with no projectors, fans or digital devices. Lessons carried on using natural light, printed materials and good old-fashioned discussion. Teachers adapted their delivery, and outdoor classrooms sprouted across the school compound.

The exercise was designed to prepare students for potential disruptions to our energy supply, particularly given Singapore’s reliance on imported fuel. In a real crisis, electricity may have to be prioritised for critical services such as hospitals, transport and essential infrastructure. Homes and organisations, including schools, may need to adapt to temporary disruptions. For our student-athletes, this was a reminder that resilience is required to adjust quickly, collaborate closely and focused on what truly mattered.

Total Defence is about readiness in every aspect of life. This year’s exercise reinforced an important message. Comfort can be taken away, but commitment to learning and responsibility to one another must remain. When circumstances change, we must adapt. When challenges arise, we stay steady. That is Total Defence in action.
