Celebrating Our Largest SEA Games Squad

33rd SEA Games Send-Off Ceremony

About 130 past and present student-athletes from Singapore Sports School were celebrated at the SEA Games Send Off Ceremony on 12 November 2025. The event was officiated by the Chef de Mission for the Team Singapore contingent, Mr Lawrence Leow.

The 33rd SEA Games, which will be held from 9 to 20 December 2025 in Thailand, will see a record number of athletes representing Singapore. Team Sports School will be represented across 32 sports, with 69 past and present student-athletes making their SEA Games debut.

Mr Lawrence Leow, who will be leading the contingent as the Chef de Mission, encouraged the athletes during his speech: “As you head to the SEA Games, remember that you are part of something greater. You represent not just your sport, but the entire Team Singapore family. You represent the resilience, unity, and spirit that define our country. Compete with courage, with heart, and with integrity.”

Principal Ong Kim Soon also emphasised the strength of the school’s sporting development pathway. “More than half of Team Sports School are current student-athletes or recent graduates from the last two years. This is a healthy number and gives us confidence that we are on the right path in nurturing and supporting our student-athletes as they pursue both sporting excellence and their studies.”

Among the youngest competitors are sport climber Janelle Phua, a Secondary 2 student-athlete, as well as swimmer Julia Yeo Shu Ning and paddler Loy Ming Ying, both from Secondary 3.

The 14-year-old sport climber, the youngest representative from Sports School, led the past and present student-athletes in delivering the athletes’ pledge. On her debut at the SEA Games, she said, “I feel a little nervous but mostly excited to compete in the SEA Games. I hope to make it to the top 8, gain valuable competition experience and learn from other climbers in the region.”

Azfar Luqman Ong, who was the emcee at the event and will be making his debut in the Men’s Épée team at the SEA Games, shared, “It feels really surreal that I will be representing Singapore at the SEA Games. I have always really wanted to qualify for the national team and represent Singapore. Though this is my debut, I have the same mindset - to do my best for Singapore. I really want to win as we have been preparing and training for so long and we are capable of bringing a medal.”

The flag-bearer for the Team Singapore contingent is alumna and Olympian, Yeo Jia Min, who also attended Ceremong. Along with her, other established athletes such Loh Kean Yew, Shanti Pereira and Amanda Lim, will be part of the 33rd edition of the SEA Games.
