Student-Athletes Catch On Spirit Of Inclusivity

2nd Singapore Sports School Para Games

The morning sun had barely begun to shine and grey clouds covered the sky following a light drizzle. As 400 para athletes streamed through the gates of Singapore Sports School for the para games on 27 April 2019, their broad smiles and excitement lifted the spirits of student-athletes welcoming them to the day’s event.

The 2nd Singapore Sports School Para Games, jointly organised by Singapore Sports School and Singapore Disability Sports Council, featured nine sports: Badminton, bowling, cerebral palsy football, goalball, powerlifting, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and track and field. Dr Teo-Koh Sock Miang, President of Special Olympics Singapore and member of Sports School’s Board of Directors, was Guest-of-Honour and opened the day’s events. The Para Games is part of the Sports School’s Values in Action initiative “Project Champions Way” which seeks to give back to the sport community and help athletes with disabilities.

Secondary 2 and 3 student-athletes, selected student leaders, staff and parent volunteers chipped in to create a warm and fun atmosphere for the participants. Ten Sports School student-athletes had the opportunity to compete alongside the para-athletes in the game of Goalball, a 3-a-side game for the visually-impaired.

Our student-athletes learnt much from the para athletes who demonstrated the Paralympic values of courage, determination, inspiration and equality.
