Batik Adds Colour To Culture
Malay Cultural Appreciation
White pieces of cloth were handed out to each student-athlete on the morning of 13 August 2020. Instead of school work, their assignment for the morning was detailed on cloth. Pens were swopped for paint brushes, another anomaly from the usual classroom setting.
As part of Malay Cultural Appreciation Day at Singapore Sports School, student-athletes learnt about the traditional Malay art form of batik painting through a hands-on activity following a video lesson on the history of batik.
Armed with batik kits which included a pre-waxed batik cloth mounted on a wooden frame, student-athletes expressed their creativity through their painting, adding colour to the monochrome canvas. Prizes were presented to 10 student-athletes with the best artwork.
