A Reflection by Cari-Anne Ong (Fencing Academy, Secondary 3)

As part of our Values in Action (VIA) project, the Fencing Academy took part in the North West CDC Sports Experience & Education workshops on the 9th, 11th and 19th May 2023. Many of us took time and initiative to plan and prepare the logistics for the event. At first, we were scared that the programme would not run smoothly as most of us were not experienced in teaching young beginner students how to fence.

When we met the students from Beacon Primary School, they were filled with excitement and energy, hence, it was hard to engage them at first. However, we stayed calm, stuck to the plan, and quickly got them to settle down. Soon, they were all intrigued and engaged in the fencing session. All the primary school students showed interest in our sport and had enthusiasm in doing things that were new to them.

We planned a mini competition for them to participate in, which brought out new sides to the students. Many of them showed passion and determination throughout the competition. It was heart-warming to see the techniques we taught being used and the students having fun fencing each other. We met many eager and energetic young students that gave us motivation to do better.

This experience helped me to heighten my leadership skills and taught me that planning is very important to ensure a smooth-running programme. I had a fun time teaching the primary school students and would love to do it again.
