Near-Perfect Outing For Sports School Cadets

2019 Singapore Cadet Challenge

Simon Lee Renjie reinforced his position as Singapore’s No. 1 Cadet epeeist when he won the individual Epee title at the 2019 Singapore Cadet Challenge on 28 September 2019. Singapore Sports School’s Secondary 4 student-athlete led the competition from Poules to direct elimination stages, before defeating former Sports School teammate Ryan Tan Jun Quan 15-14 in a closely-fought Men’s Epee Final to clinch the gold medal.

Simon’s win in the Singapore tournament follows a strong performance at the 2019 Thailand Open Fencing Championships where he notched his biggest career achievement. The 16-year-old fencer won an individual silver medal, before teaming up with Sports School post-secondary student-athletes Jefferson Cheong Jia Hui and Tan Weixuan for the Epee Team silver in Bangkok from 9 to 12 September. Simon, Jefferson and Weixuan will be making their debut at the Philippines 2019 Southeast Asian Games at the end of the year.

Back in Singapore, Sports School’s fencers clinched five out of six gold medals on offer at the SCC from 28 to 29 September. In the Men’s Sabre Dan Wei Zuo and Legolas Lee Zhao Yu made it an all-Sports School final which concluded in favour of Wei Zuo. Cheung Kemei (Women’s Foil), Joel Chiu Ka Jyn (Men’s Foil) and Megan Au Cheok Tung (Women’s Sabre) were Sports School’s other gold medallists. Fencing Academy student-athletes won 5 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals in all over the two-day tournament.
