After a long hiatus from competitive action, Singapore Sports School’s fencers were thrilled to put on their fencing gear and pick up their respective swords to spar with other local fencers. A whooping 34 medals were attained during the three national competitions held in November.

At the 2021 Singapore Cadet Nationals held from 6 to 7 November 2021, fencers lunged their way to 10 podium finishes which earned them 3 gold and 7 bronze medals. Secondary 4 sabre fencers Juliet Heng Jie Min and Isaac Ong Shao En clinched gold medals in their respective events, while Cheung Kemei, also from Secondary 4, finished 1st in the Cadet Women’s Foil event. It was a momentous victory for Azfar Luqman Ong (Secondary 3), Marcus Maximilian Tan (Secondary 3), Josiah Wei Kai Liang (Secondary 2) and Esther Tan (Secondary 3) who felt the pride and excitement of medalling and standing as podium finishers for the first time.

The senior fencers did just as well at the 2021 Singapore Senior Nationals that was organised from 12 to 14 November. A total of 11 medals were clinched by past and present student-athletes, including a 1-2-3 finish in the Senior Men’s Sabre event. IBDP Year 6 student-athlete who just finished his last paper for his final examinations the day before, moved from the books to the sports competitive arena effortlessly with a first-place finish for the Men’s Sabre event. Simon Lee Renjie (DBS Year 2) proved that he is still on top of his game by finishing with a gold medal.

At the Singapore Junior Nationals from 27 to 28 November, fencers picked up 13 medals – the highest count in the series of competitions. Year 3 Diploma in Business Studies sabreur James Xuan-Xin Ng achieved a gold medal, improving his standing from his silver-medal finish at the senior event.

Cheung Kemei is the only fencer that participated and medalled in all three competitions. After a successful gold medal victory for the Cadet Women’s Foil event, she punched above her weight to finish third among the junior and senior foilists. The Secondary 4 student-athlete was heartened that she returned home with a medal from all the competitions. She shared: “The truth is that I feel that I could do better. However, this was a good session for me to test my skills, especially since I am training hard for major Games such as the Southeast Asian Games and Asian Games next year.”
