Kimberly 1st In 1st Asean Deaf Bowling Championships

2019 ASEAN Deaf Bowling Championships


Over the 4-day of intense pinfall actions at the inaugural ASEAN Deaf Bowling Championships, Singapore Sports School post-secondary IB Year 2 student-athlete, Kimberly Quek Hwee, clinched 4 golds and 1 bronze in 4 events, including 1 All-Events gold medal.

Against strong opponents from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, Kimberly got off with a winning start with a Women’s Singles gold on 25 April, racking up a total of 1256 pinfalls.

Her opening victory did not stop her in her pursuit for excellence as she stayed focus on her podium finish. On the second day of the Championship, Kimberly did not disappoint her cheering crowd by clinching yet another gold medal in the Doubles Event, together with Team Singapore compatriot, Adelia Naomi Yokoyama. The two bowlers-to-watch, who made history by winning the first-ever medals at the Deaflympics 2017, were trailing behind by 66 pins in the fifth game but bounced back to victory with a 6-pin difference in the final game.

Kimberly did not give herself a chance to be complacent as she punched above her weight again in the Women’s Trios team event. Kimberly’s pinfall of 1256 in the Singles, 1070 in the Doubles, and 1206 in the Trios, for a combined total of 3532 pinfalls landed her the All-Events gold medal.

The competition drew to a thrilling conclusion on 28 April. Kimberly was seeded second in the Women’s Masters Finals with 1527 pinfalls over eight games. She settled for bronze after a 154-pinfall game in the Stepladders, to third seed Maria Lovella’s 189 pinfalls.
