Shuttlers Bag 5 Titles

2021 Papago Badminton Carnival

Badminton student-athletes performed commendably at the 2021 Papago Badminton Carnival, held at Singapore Sports School from 13 to 21 March 2021, netting at total of 5 gold, 2 silver, 14 bronze medals at the Singapore Badminton Federation-sanctioned Tier 2 tournament.

Secondary 4 veteran shuttlers Marcus Phil Lau Jun Hui, Ng In Qin, Remus Ng and Julian Ho Yu Feng swept the Boys Singles Under 17 event, taking the 1st, 2nd and Joint-3rd titles, while batch mate Megan Lee Xinyi scooped up the gold for the Girls Singles U17 with her strong performance. In Qin and Remus continued their winning streak at the Boys Doubles U17, securing the gold, while Donovan Willard Wee (DBIZ Year 2) and Torance Jng Yao Chee (DBS Year 2) finished first at the Boys Doubles U19.

For Secondary 2 student-athlete Chia Xin Ying, it had been more than a year since she had gone to a competition, and she had been worried that she would not be able to perform well at the tournament.

Yet, the shuttler sailed through her matches, coming in tops at the Girls Singles U15. The first-time winner in the National Age Group category credits the training at Sports School as improving her speed and anticipation skills. Xin Ying also mentioned it was the impressive training programme which led her to enrol, as well as the athlete-friendly academic programmes, and the added convenience of boarding facilities and support. Xin Ying, who is happy to have achieved her maiden National Age Group title shared that her Academy’s mantra helped her to achieve this accomplishment: “As long as you are willing to train and put in effort, you will be able to get there.”
