Gymnasts Land 37 Medals At National Champs

2021 Singapore National Gymnastics Championships

From 12 to 21 March 2021, Bishan Sports Hall came alive with athletes demonstrating strength and control. Gymnasts, with their graceful tumbles, gravity-defying somersaults and perfect splits, competed at the 2021 Singapore National Gymnastics Championships – the first fully face-to-face competition staged since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Singapore Sports School’s artistic and rhythmic gymnasts delivered strong performances to emerge among the top in their respective divisions. In the artistic discipline, Kho Tong-Yu and Abdul Barr Abdulatiff outdid their rivals in the Men’s FIG Junior Individual All-Around, clinching the gold and silver respectively. Tong-Yu, a Secondary 4 student-athlete, maintained his form to finish among the top three positions in all six individual apparatus which included golds in the Floor Exercise and Parallel Bars. Secondary 2’s Barr also won five individual apparatus medal, including the top prize in the Rings and Vault events.

The FIG Senior division saw Diploma in Sport Management (DSPM) Year 3 student-athlete Mohammad Mikhail Haziq Mohammed Ghazali on the podium four times; once for his third-place finish in the IAA.

Taking to the floor next, Sports School’s rhythmic gymnasts also ranked among the top few in the FIG Senior and Junior IAA. Leah Chew (DSPM Year 3) led the medal charge with 2 silvers in the Senior IAA and Ball, and 3 bronzes in the Clubs, Hoop and Ribbon. Low Yu Yenn (Secondary 4) also achieved notable results, rounding up the medallists in the Senior IAA, and also clinching the Ribbon gold and Clubs silver. Other medallists included Lim Jia Min (Secondary 3) – who won the Junior Ribbon event, Sophia Ho Jin Wen (Secondary 3) and Steffi Chan Min (Secondary 2).

Altogether, Sports School’s student-athletes and alumni won 37 medals – 14 golds, 12 silvers and 11 bronzes – over the 10-day meet.
