Past And Present Student-Athletes Win National Ranking Games

2021 1st, 2nd National Ranking Games

Singapore’s golfers were back into the swing of competition for the 2021 1st National Ranking Game organised by Singapore Golf Association from 15 to 17 June 2021. The 2nd NRG followed in quick succession from 23 to 25 June.

Singapore Sports School’s past and present student-athletes performed well in both ranking tournaments. Hailey Loh Suanne affirmed her position as Singapore’s top female golfer by clinching the Ladies’ titles in both NRGs, while the Men’s titles were won by Justin Kuk Zheng Zhong (1st NRG) and Nicholas Mok Chee Yong (2nd NRG).

Hailey opened the 1st NRG with an impressive 5-under 67 strokes to gain an early lead in the overall competitor field. She managed to hold on to her lead with two subsequent rounds of 3-over 75 to finish with a seven-stroke lead over her closest rival.

The national golfer, who is on college break after her first year at California Baptist University in the USA, delivered commendable performances in back-to-back tournaments – a 2nd-place finish in the CarTimes Singapore Junior Development Tour Championship from 21 to 22 June, and went on to retain her title in the 2nd NRG which followed immediately after.

Hailey, a Sports School alumna put up a strong fight in the final day of the 2nd NRG. Going into the last round seven strokes behind national teammate Aloysa Atienza, Hailey fired 5-under 67 strokes reach a 208 stroke-tie with her rival. Hailey was handed the champion title by virtue of her lower score in the last round. IBDP Year 6 student-athlete Inez Ng Xin Yi came in third with an even-par 216 strokes.

In the Men’s event of the 2nd NRG, alumnus Nicholas, who started Round 2 in 5th place, shot into the lead after carding 7-under 65 strokes on the Kranji Sanctuary Golf Course at National Service Resort and Country Club. He finished with a commendable 10-under 206 strokes for a three stroke lead over his closest competitor. Diploma in Business Studies Year 3’s Brandon Han Zhen Guang was third (216 strokes).

Justin, who is studying in the customised Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management programme, was the only player to maintain even-par at the end of the three-round 1st NRG contested at Sentosa Golf Club’s New Tanjong Course. His consistent form saw him move up from a tied-5th position at the end of the first day to lead the competition on the second day, and further extending his lead marginally on the final day. By the end of the three rounds, he had a two stroke lead over runners-up Ryan Ang and IBDP Extended student-athlete Eng Wei Jin. Despite tying on total stroke count with Ryan, Wei Jin eventually ranked third based on countback.
