Bowlers Go On Strike In Hong Kong

2019 Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championships

Singapore’s youth bowlers went on strike at the South China Athletic Association Bowling Centre in Hong Kong, winning a dozen medals at the 20th Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championships from 6 to 12 July 2019.

Singapore Sports School post-secondary student-athlete Fion Liew Shan Ting was on fire as she opened the Girls Doubles event with a 299-pinfall game. She maintained her form to achieve a cumulative score of 1,432 pinfalls (238.67 pinfalls average) over six games, combining with compatriot Arielle Tay’s score for the gold medal (2,663 pinfalls total). Althea Dang Thanh Ly, a Secondary 3 bowler from Sports School, paired up with Arianne Tay to finish second with a total of 2,607 pinfalls.

The 17-year-old’s strong performance in the Singles, Doubles and Team of 4 events earned her the All-Events title. Fion, in Year 2 of the Diploma in Business Studies, averaged a creditable 224.74 pinfalls over 34 games, winning 2 golds, 1 silver and 2 bronzes to become Singapore’s top performer at the tournament, collecting medals in all possible events, including the Girls Doubles and All-Events titles.

Fion was amongst seven Sports School bowlers – four girls and three boys – who qualified for the Masters Finals. Only the top 16 bowlers in the All-Events ranking for each gender category qualify for the Masters event.

Twelve present and past student-athletes from Sports School’s Bowling Academy formed three-quarters of the Singapore team that won a total of 3 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals. All 16 bowlers returned from Hong Kong donned with at least one medal after finishing 2-3 in the both the Boys and Girls Team of 4.
