Sport Champions Champion For Sport At Kindred Spirit Meet

2019 Club Zoom-ActiveSG 6th Kindred Spirit Series

Reuben Rainer Lee Siong En’s 48.64s over 400m is the best time in the six-year history of the Kindred Spirit Series. The Singapore Sports School’s post-secondary student-athlete eclipsed the previous Championship Record of 49.92s, set by Ng Chin Hui in 2014, on 17 August 2019.

Reuben, whose pet events are the 100m and 200m, had a convincing victory, ending the race with at least a 20m lead over his competitors. The next best time in the four-timed finals competition was 50.70s by Alex Rodney Koh. Fellow post-secondary student-athlete Mohammad Irfan Qabeel Md Daud (50.75s) claimed the bronze medal in the same event.

The 17-year-old’s record-breaking feat earned him the title of Men’s Best Overall Performer. Reuben, a Year 1 Diploma in Business Studies sprinter, also won another gold medal in the Men’s Open 4x100m Relay event with post-secondary teammates Marcell Tan Yann Guang, Nur Syarin Zahari and Shawn Jong Tze Chean. The Sports School quartet faced a strong challenge from the Brunei Darussalam Athletics Federation team but managed to cross the finish line in 42.27s, 0.18s ahead of their Southeast Asian competitors.

Sports School secondary and post-secondary student-athletes from the Track and Field Academy were thrown out of their comfort zones during the weekend meet on 16 and 17 August 2019, held at Home of Athletics, better known as Kallang Practice Track, and Choa Chu Kang Stadium. Sprinters put their speed endurance to the test in longer sprint distances, while some also took advantage of their explosive power to launch themselves the furthest possible into the sand. Middle-distance runners were forced to activate their fast-twitch muscles in sprint events and explosiveness in the jumps. The Track and Field student-athletes performed well in the competition, winning 6 gold, 7 silver and 8 bronze medals over the two-day meet organised by Club Zoom.

The meet, which aims to attract likeminded athletes in celebration of “sportsmanship, camaraderie and athletic prowess”, attracted a record 1,200 participants for the 2019 Club Zoom-ActiveSG 6th Kindred Spirit Series, including athletes from Southeast Asian countries.

Sports School student-athletes found the opportunity to develop not only physically in their sport, but also in knowledge and character. Over the two days, student-athletes and their parents helped out in the Call Room, on the ground as field judges and as photographers where they learnt about the administrative and technical support required at athletics meets. During the meet, student-athletes were seen swopping their competition jerseys for official wear to help the organisers when they weren’t competing.
