Sporting Stars Honoured At Awards Ceremonies

Singapore Sports Awards 2022, Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) Awards 2022

It was a night of celebration for the sports fraternity on 10 November 2022, as finalists of the Singapore Sports Awards 2022 gathered at Marina Bay Sands to celebrate their sporting excellence and to receive recognition for their tenacity and resilience in overcoming obstacles and challenges in their sporting journey.

Amidst a strong list of finalists, alumnus Loh Kean Yew (Badminton) and Secondary 4 paddler Ser Lin Qian (Table Tennis) won the top honours of the night.

Loh Kean Yew took the Sportsman of the Year award - his maiden win in this category.  The Award came two days after he rose from World No. 5 to a career-high ranking of World No. 3. He has also been nominated for the BWF Male Player of The Year award, making him the first Singaporean to be shortlisted for the award.

The Sportsgirl of the Year Award came as a surprise for Lin Qian, who bagged 3 golds and 1 silver in the 2022 Word Table Tennis (WTT) Youth Contender Series, and was promoted to the National Team in January 2022. She said: “There have been injuries and moments of self-doubt in my sporting journey, but this Award is very meaningful to me as it gives me the confidence to stand back up again. It also motivates me to keep working harder to achieve even more. I am very grateful to the Singapore National Olympic Council for giving me this Award.”

The Team of the Year (Event) went to the Bowling Men’s Team, which alumnus Darren Ong Wei Siong was part of. The team won a historic silver medal at the 2021 International Bowling Federation (IBF) Super World Championships, after an intense fight against their South Korean opponents.

The other Sports School finalists, who also had a stellar year include paddler Izaac Yong Quek (finalist for Sportsboy of the Year), and past-student-athletes fencer Amita Berthier (finalist for Sportswoman of the Year), , badminton mixed doubles pair Terry Hee Yong Kai and Jessica Tan Wei Han, and sailor Cecilia Low Rui Qi (finalists for Team of the Year – Event).

Meanwhile, the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) also paid tribute to national shuttlers for an outstanding year at the inaugural SBA Awards and Gala Night held on 20 November 2022.

Loh Kean Yew was presented the Player of the Year and Media Player of the Year, while mixed doubles duo and real-life couple Terry Hee Yong Kai and Jessica Tan Wei Han won the Outstanding Performance of the Year award. Alumna Crystal Wong Jia Ying was recognised for being the Most Improved Player of the Year. Rising stars and current student-athletes Johann Prajogo (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 2), Nge Joo Jie (Diploma in Business, Year 2) and Megan Lee Xinyi (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 1) also returned with the Young Player of the Year award for male and female categories respectively. The Commonwealth Games team, consisting of Crystal Wong Jia Ying, Jason Teh Jia Heng, Jessica Tan Wei Han, Loh Kean Hean, Loh Kean Yew, Nur Insyirah Khan Abdul Hamid Khan, Terry Hee Yong Kai and Yeo Jia Min (all alumni), received the Team of the Year Award for their stellar performance.
