Pencak Silat Exponents Maintain Top Form In Local and International Competitions

Rising to Greatness: The Beginning and International Martial Arts Competition

10 Pencak Silat exponents from the Singapore Sports School rose to the challenge and competed in a local competition called Rising to Greatness: The Beginning from 4 to 12 November 2022. After a gruelling week of matches, nine of them emerged champions in their category.

Secondary 3 student-athlete Rifqah Mursyidah Binte Mistam then continued her foray into competitive Pencak Silat in South Korea where she competed in the International Martial Arts Competition together with four other student-athletes from 16 to 21 November. Rifqah put up a valiant effort and finished 5th in Female Solo Weapon category.

Rifqah shared her experiences from these competitions: “In the Rising to Greatness: The Beginning competition, I had a tough match in the semi-finals and was head-to-head with my opponent for the first 2 rounds. In the final round, I paid more attention to my cornerman’s instructions and managed to win the match 74-54. I learnt that it is important to listen to what my cornerman is saying as they are watching the match from a different perspective and would be able to give better advice as the match progresses.

Taking part in the competition in South Korea, I was able to appreciate the different martial arts on showcase from different countries such as Bokator from Cambodia, Taekwondo from Korea and Uzbek Jang from Uzbekistan.” The other participants in the competition were Danial Hariz Rizal (Secondary 1), Mohammad Ridzqi Mohammad Fadzil (Secondary 2), Muhammad Naufal Abdullah (Secondary 4) and Nur Aniqah Qistina Roslan (Secondary 2).

Their progress in the local and international scene is indeed exciting to watch and we are rooting for more of their successes in the future!
