Bowlers’ Perfect Double

2019 National School Bowling Championships (‘B’ Division)

A perfect 300 pinfalls on the opening day of the 2019 National School Bowling “B” Division Championships foreshadowed a perfect outing for Irfan Hamed. After a convincing win in the Boys Singles, the Singapore Sports School student-athlete delivered consistent performances in the Doubles and Quartet to win the coveted All Events title, as well as help Sports School to the Overall Championship trophy. His effort won him 2 gold and 1 silver medals.

Overcoming a rough start of 182 pinfalls in the first game of the Boys Singles, Irfan slowly found his line to string 12 strikes in Game 5 for a perfect game. The Secondary 4 bowler closed with 208 pinfalls in the last of six games for the gold medal. Irfan’s six-game total of 1,289 pinfalls gave him a comfortable lead of 47 pinfalls over his closest competitor, Khor Zi Jian from Hai Sing Catholic School. The second largest marginal lead in the tournament was 23 pinfalls. Gerald Teng Woo Kiat, Sports School’s Secondary 3 student-athlete, finished fourth in the same event.

Sports School fielded medal-winning teams in the Boys and Girls categories, with student-athletes taking at least one podium spot in each event. The Girls also lifted the Overall Championship trophy buoyed by gold medal-performances in the Doubles and Quartet events. The girls also clinched a bronze medal in the latter event.

Three female student-athletes emerged in the top four in the All Events following strong and consistent games throughout the meet from 26 February to 5 March 2019 – Mandy Koh Mun Leng, Ashley Teoh Zi Ling and Althea Dang Thanh Ly finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. Dylan Teo Zi Jun finished two rungs behind Irfan in the Boys All Events. Altogether, Sports School Bowling Academy’s “B” Division bowlers won 4 gold, 3 silver, 4 bronze and 4 fourth-place medals.
