2019 Southeast Asian Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championships

Team Singapore had a successful outing at the 25th Southeast Asian Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championships, garnering 22 medals from 13 events. Singapore Sports School student-athletes and alumni contributed to 19 prizes – a creditable 86 per cent of the total tally.

From 4 to 9 June 2019, Sports School’s paddlers delivered strong performances to win all of Singapore’s 9 gold medals, which included the retention of seven titles. Secondary 2 student-athlete successfully Zhou Jingyi defended her Cadet Girls Singles title and also in the Team event, while student-athlete Koen Pang Yew En recaptured gold medals in the Junior Boys Doubles, Boys Team and Mixed Doubles events. Sports School’s present and past student-athletes also won 4 silver and 6 bronze medals at the tournament in Bangkok, Thailand.

Secondary 1 student-athlete Izaac Quek Yong won three golds – Cadet Boys Singles, Doubles and Team – to sweep the top prize in every event in the Cadet Boys category. At the 24th edition in 2018, Izaac’s run in the Singles competition ended in the Semi-Finals, seeing him settle for bronze. Nearly one year on and wielding greater experience, he emerged victorious in the same Under 15 event.

Singapore was top on the medal tally with 9 golds, 5 silvers 8 bronzes among seven other Southeast Asian countries: Brunei, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
