Putting Team First

Bowling Academy Training Camp (Lower Secondary)

Building team spirit and camaraderie is essential in attaining extraordinary results – even in an individual sport. A 19th Century American business tycoon Andrew Carnegie once said: “Teamwork is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.” Singapore Sports School Bowling Academy’s firm belief in teamwork and mutual support saw the Lower Secondary student-athletes participate in a training cum teambuilding camp in Johor, Malaysia, from 11 to 16 June 2019.

Secondary 1 and 2 bowlers crossed the Causeway for six fun, yet intense, days of activities that developed them as an individual and bonded them as a team ahead of their 2019 National School Games season in July. In addition to teambuilding activities, there was a stronger emphasis on teamwork during bowling training sessions, as well as a local competition, to reinforce its importance.

The lower secondary bowlers competed in the 2019 Pasir Gudang Tenpin Bowling International Cup on the penultimate day of the overseas training camp. Girded by the support and encouragement from their peers, Sports School’s 13- and 14-year-old student-athletes demonstrated composure and skill in the Under 18 tournament which saw participation by players from various states in Malaysia.

Prior to the competition, the Sports School bowlers underwent games and activities aimed at building a more united team. The sessions which included activities such as raft-building, an Amazing Race and high elements saw them stepping out of their comfort zones and overcoming their fears through the moral support from their peers.
