Secondary 1 Experience Home Sweet Home

Singapore Sports School Orientation Camp 2019/2020 (Part 2)

While 1 January 2020 is a public holiday, more than 100 student-athletes streamed into the school in the late afternoon with their luggage while accompanied by loved ones, to start a brand new chapter in their lives.

There was a flurry of emotions as they came into the school – anxiety, anticipation and excitement. Transitioning into a new environment and being away from their families can be nerve-wrecking for 13-year-olds.

The orientation camp aims to help the student-athletes get mentally prepared for new academic subjects, manage sports training as part of their daily schedule, and adapt to boarding life.

For most of the Secondary 1s, it was not the first time that they have had a taste of the Sports School life. The Sports School Orientation Camp is a two-part series, with the first part held in October 2019 for then-Primary 6 prospective student-athletes to give them an experience of being a student-athlete.

During this camp from 1 to 3 January, there were fun team bonding activities, water activities and orientation games that gave student-athletes the opportunity to interact with their seniors and make new friends. The camp culminated with an Induction Ceremony, a symbolic ceremony where the parents of Secondary 1 student-athletes put on a collar pin for them, before they sang the school anthem for the first time. The camp ended with high energy as student-athletes did the school cheer together with a mass dance.

We wish student-athletes all the best, and may you have an enriching and fulfilling experience at the Sports School!
