Golfers' Strong Finish

2019 SGA 5th National Ranking Game, Sarawak Chief Minister's Cup, SICC/DBS Junior Invitational Golf Championship, China (Hainan) Junior Golf Classic

Singapore Sports School’s past, present and prospective golfers have finished 2019 strong, holing out notable achievements on the greens in several competitions.

DSLM Year 2 student-athlete Justin Kuk Zheng Zhong was on fire in three back-to-back competitions, notching top-4 finishes in as many tournaments over two weeks. He started off by winning the 2019 5th National Ranking Game organised by Singapore Golf Association from 20 to 22 November 2019. A final score of 1-under 212 strokes at the end of the three-round tournament at Warren Golf and Country Club placed him top male local golfer, while alumnus Lucius Toh Zheng Xian came in third position, 4 strokes behind Justin. Prospective student-athlete Inez Ng Xin Yi was ranked highest on the leaderboard in the Girls division with a comfortable 8-stroke lead over her closest rival.

Justin kept up his momentum for the 21st Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup in Kuching, Sarawak, emerging 4th-best in the Special Division for players 21 years old and younger. Soon after returning to home ground, the 18-year-old again finished 4th at another international tournament – the 28th SICC/DBS Junior Invitational Golf Championship from 3 to 5 December. At the end of three rounds, Justin was tied on 224 strokes with fellow DSLM Year 2 golfer Andre Chong Wei Zer who had placed 7th in the Sarawak tournament. However, a lower round on the final day broke the tie and gave Andre the 2nd Runner-Up trophy in the Boys “A” Division. Andre, ranked 3rd in the SICC “A” Division. Alumna Nicole Mok Shue Ying also finished 4th in the Girls event.

DBS Year 1’s Brandon Han Zhen Guang continued Sports School’s strong presence in international tournaments when he fired 2-under 70 strokes in his fourth and final round of the China (Hainan) Junior Golf Classic. His total of 297 strokes from 6 to 9 December won him the Runner-Up title in the Boys “A” Division for under-19 players. Inez concluded the same tournament in 5th place in the girls category.

Just one day prior to Brandon’s podium-finish, alumni Low Wee Jin and Nicklaus Chiam Yew Chun received the Men’s Team silver medal at the Philippines 2019 Southeast Asian Games after a defeat to Thailand in the matchplay final.
