Levelling Up With The National Team

Training Tour to Canberra, Australia and Asian Invitational Event to Jeonju, Korea

Training Tour to Canberra, Australia

Written by Faithmaria Ifeoma Mckevin Lawrence (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 1)

I was fortunate to take part in the Singapore U21 netball team's tour of Canberra, Australia which took place from 30 July to 5 August 2022. We went through a training session followed by a game every day. Overall, we performed admirably, winning 3 games while losing the other 2.

Through this experience, I managed to learn a lot from my teammates and opponents. I discovered that in a game where both teams are equally skilled, it comes down to who has the better team spirit and executed certain skills, such as footwork and passing better. Another thing I learnt is that better teams tend to be more competitive and will make the most out of any opportunity given.

The last two days of Jill Mcintosh's training were beneficial for the team. Jill showed us various defence throw-in setups and we practiced anticipating interceptions rather than reacting to them to be more effective in our game. We also practiced defensive drills such as body angles and switches that would be helpful when playing full court. As a result of that training, our team was able to better our attack and defence and personally, I was able to make more interceptions during the game.

Asian Invitational Event to Jeonju, Korea

Netballers and present student-athletes Janissa Tan Wei Ting, Jernise Moh Jing Wen (both Secondary 5), Christy Ng Kai Xi (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 3), Kimberly Koh Jing Ting (IBDP, Year 5) and Valerie Sim Pei Qi (IBDP, Year 6) joined alumni Kristy Tan Wei Lin, Ella Leonora Baptist and Ho Sue-Ann, and the rest of the Singapore Netball U19 team at the Asian Invitational Event in Jeonju, Korea from 1 to 6 August 2022. They faced 3 other teams from Korea, Nepal and Philippines in the friendly competition and emerged top of the group!

“It was an eye-opening experience for me and my friends. We played against teams who have older and more experienced players. This trip taught us how to play smartly and I have become a stronger player both physically and mentally. I am thankful for this opportunity,” said Janissa Tan.
