Swimming, Running And Jumping To New Heights In Khon Kaen

22nd Thailand Sports School Games

30 swimmers, 35 trackers, 72 medals, 36 Personal Best times and 2 Meet Records summed up the 22nd Thailand Sports School Games held in Khon Kaen, Thailand, from 29 July to 7 August 2019. The swimmers had arrived first at the competition on 29 July. Over two days of intense competition amongst seven sports schools, Singapore Sports School Swimming Academy was awarded the Overall Champions and Best Girls Team Overall titles. Elyza Melinda Mak and Candice Ang Ruo Han were named the Girls U14 and Girls U16 Most Valuable Players, respectively for achieving 3 golds and 1 Meet Record each. To sweeten the pot, Elyza broke her own Personal Best time to rewrite the Meet Record and Candice won her final gold medal on her birthday.

Swimming coaches Mylene Ong and Fang Haijiao also received the Excellent Coaching Award. Altogether, the Swimming Academy won 18 gold, 14 silver and 18 bronze medals, and made 30 Personal Best times.

It was not all about sport for the swimmers who had the opportunity to visit the Natural History Museum of Khon Kaen after their competitions ended. The student-athletes were intrigued by the biology, geography and anthropology of Khon Kaen such as the display of dinosaur bones.

The Track and Field Academy arrived to join the swimmers on 31 July at the Sports School Games in Khon Kaen. Singapore Sports School's student-athletes won two golds, one silver and three bronzes on 2 August 2019, the opening day of the track and field competition.

The second day of the track and field competition was a day for Singapore Sports School’s jumpers who braved the elements and strong competition to take home two silver and, one bronze medals and 2 personal best by Ezra Nur Iman Zainal, Bhavika Chandru and Andrew George Medina.

The limelight turned to “iron man” Raeshon Loo Wei Ming on 5 August who defeated mental and physical fatigue, as well as 11 other Thai competitors, to emerge champion in the Boys U18 Octathlon. Nur Syarin Zahari and Samantha Theresa Ortega had also clinched a silver medal in the 200m sprint event for Boys U18 and Girls U14 respectively, while hurdler Rachel Chin Hui Ya clinched the silver medal in the Girls U18 100m Hurdles. Samantha’s time of 26.46s, a new Personal Best, bettered the previous Meet Record.

The Track and Field Academy finished strong on the last day of the competition on 6 August. The U14 Boys rose to the challenge and clinched the 4x400m Relay gold, while the U14 Girls and U18 Boys took bronze medals in the same event. At the Boys U18 Long Jump and U14 Pentathlon, Muhammad Hazim Ismail and Kyan Chong Jun Xiang repectively clinched silver medals. Hazim's distance of 6.69m is also a Personal Best.

The Track and Field Academy clinched 6 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze medals over the five days of competition. The boys’ team was also named Overall Boys champion for their strong performance in the U14, U16 and U18 age-groups.
