48 past and present Sports School student-athletes, including 13 new recipients were awarded the 2023 spexScholarship. The spexScholarship is given out annually to student-athletes who show great sporting potential. The award not only assists them in their sport but will also help in their education, career and personal development.

Amirah Sahrin, who won a bronze medal at the 2021 SEA Games and a gold medal at the 2022 8th SEA Pencak Silat Championship and became World Champion at the 9th World Pencak Silat Championships, was one of the recipients of the scholarship.

“I am able to focus more on my training as I will be supported financially for my training equipment and my transportation costs. The financial support will help me stay committed and focused in the sport,” she commented. She also wanted her juniors to be brave and take risks. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take the chance. If you risk it and it fails, it’s okay. There’s always a next time,” she advised.

Another recipient of the award is wushu exponent Zoe Tan Ziyi, a second-year student-athlete in the Diploma in Business Studies programme with Ngee Ann Polytechnic. She has been in the national wushu team for a decade. Though the transition from junior games to major games was tough, she kept pushing and fought for her dreams. This scholarship means alot to Zoe as it releases financial stress from her family.

‘Every overseas training stint comes with costs. I come from a single-parent household and my mother has sacrificed a lot to get me to this stage. I'de very much like to be able to help reduce her financial burden. With the scholarship, I can now focus and train full-time without needing to worry about quickly finishing my studies and joining the workforce to build a career."

She expresses gratitude for her team, coaches, manager Ms Serena Wong, mentor Ms Vera Ho and her mother for always standing by her and facing all the pressure with her.

“Together with my never-give-up spirit and my village of supporters, I managed to overcome challenges and am gearing up to prove myself in the upcoming SEA Games,” she said.

Congratulations to everyone that has received the spexScholarship! Dream on, champions!
