YONEX Latvia International 2022 and 15th Chinese Swimming Club Age Group Badminton (Invitational) Tournament 2022
Third-year Diploma in Business Studies student-athlete Lim Shun Tian flew to Latvia for the YONEX Latvia International 2022 from 31 August to 4 September 2022 with excitement and anticipation. His run at the tournament ended when he lost to Italy’s Christopher Vittoriani in the semi-finals 11-21, 12-21. He finished in the joint-third position, while Christopher Vittoriani whom he lost to, went on to become the title winner of the tournament.
Locally, shuttlers also proved themselves at the 15th Chinese Swimming Club Age Group Badminton (Invitational) Tournament 2022 held from 5 to 11 September. They won an impressive 5 titles and 15 medals.
Among the medallists is Secondary 1 student-athlete Sophie Aleena Likwan, an alumna of St. Anthony’s Canossian Primary School. The petite Sophie proved tactically superior to her opponents and secured 1st position in the Under-15 Girls’ Singles category and added another gold trophy in the Under-15 Girls’ Doubles category when she paired up with Sports School team mate Loh Ying Fang (Secondary 1).
“I am happy with my performance. After not performing well in the March and June competitions, I think I did quite well this time by winning the single and double categories. I kept telling myself not to give up and fight hard for every point. My game plan was to make less mistakes, be patient, don't rush in the games, and be confident in myself,” said Sophie.
The Sports School colours stood out on the podium for the Under-17 Boys’ Singles, Girls’ Singles and Boys’ Doubles events, as shuttlers took home the 1st, 2nd, and joint-3rd positions in the events. Chua Min Han and Heng Xiao En (both Secondary 4) were the title winners of the Under-17 Boys’ and Girls’ Singles respectively.
