Values in Action: Swimming Academy and Aquatics

The Swimming Academy and student-athletes in the Aquatics sports spent the last day of their school holidays in a meaningful way out in the waters. This time, they were not training in the waters, but were engaged in a Values In Action (VIA) project. 20 swimmers, 10 Water Polo boys and one Artistic Swimmer participated in this VIA.

They headed to PAssion WaVe at Marina Bay on 9 September 2022 for a signature programme known as Kayak N Kleen. As part of the programme, student-athletes are required to get into teams of two, pick up a paddle to get out in the sea, and do a clean-up. For the student-athletes, it was an enjoyable activity as they had the opportunity to do a water sport, while learning about environmental conservation and team building.

The Water Polo team recently went for a Values In Action (VIA) project - Kayak and Kleen. It was a rare opportunity where we could gather together and have fun and enjoy ourselves in the cooling weather as our schedules are often packed, leaving us with little time to bond with one another. As part of the VIA, we had to kayak and pick up litter. This is the second VIA project that we have done this year, and we are grateful for the opportunity to be able to give back to the community by picking up trash such as plastic bottles, cigarette buds, plastic bags, and more. While kayaking and picking up the litter, I was chatting with my partner on the kayak, Wu Yee, and learnt more about him. The team became more connected after the kayaking session and everyone got closer in the short two hours. We definitely had a blast and it was an experience that we would never forget!

The experience of kayaking with my friends in the Swimming Academy was a thrilling and exciting one. But not only was it fun, it was also an eye opener for us, teaching us about the harmful effects we have on the ocean’s ecosystem, as well as how much of our waste can be found in Singapore’s reservoirs. In conclusion, this kayaking trip was a meaningful and very memorable one.
