Prospective Student-Athletes Enjoy Unique Sports School Experience

Sports School Orientation Camp 2019/2020

Singapore Sports School welcomed over 100 Primary 6 prospective student-athletes on 14 October 2019 to experience the life of a Sports School student-athlete at the school campus. Over the two days on 14 and 15 October, with an overnight stay at Sports School’s Boarding facilities, the prospective student-athletes had fun, learnt new skills and made many new friends.

On the first day, after ice-breaking games, the prospective student-athletes made their way to the Singapore Water Centre at the Sports Hub for dragon boating, a first-time experience for many of them. The Sports School experience will not be complete without any sports training so in the afternoon, the prospective student-athletes experienced how sports training is like at the Singapore Sports School. In the evening, they prepared and rehearsed for their performance items on Celebration Night which will take place the next day, and to which their parents are invited.

The prospective student-athletes woke up bright and early on the second day, and had breakfast at The Arena – the school’s dining hall. They were joined by Sports School student-athletes for breakfast and were given tips on making healthy food choices and calorie monitoring. The Sports School experience became even more authentic when they joined the school morning school assembly with the rest of the school population.  This was followed by a series of team bonding games.

Celebration Night was held on the second and last day, which was attended by staff and parents of the prospective student-athletes. The parents got to hear from Ms Angie Putt, parent of post-secondary swimmer Ritchie Oh Rui Zhi who will be representing Singapore at the 2019 Philippines Southeast Asian Games. Ms Putt shared parenting tips on raising a student-athlete, and how she has worked in partnership with Sports School to maximise the potential of her son. School Principal Mr Tan Teck Hock shared with parents about how they can reach out to the school if they require assistance, as well as Registration Day and Posting Day procedures. The audience also heard from three prospective student-athletes who shared their most memorable experience during the camp.

The Celebration Night reached a climax with the prospective student-athletes competing in a creative percussion competition, something for which they have been practising hard since the camp started. Cluster 3, comprising Aquatics, Swimming Academy and Track and Field Academy, won the top prize.

It was heartening to see how the prospective student-athletes have enjoyed the camp and are looking forward to being enrolled into Sports School officially come January 2020. Part 2 of the Sports School Orientation will continue in January 2020, when Sports School continues to help the student-athletes settle in.
