Light And Delightful Celebration

2019 Deepavali Celebration

On 1 November 2019, Singapore Sports School student-athletes and staff gathered at The Arena to celebrate Deepavali, which is observed by Hindus to mark the triumph of good over evil. More importantly, it was a celebration of togetherness and promotion of racial harmony.

Principal Tan Teck Hock initiated the Deepavali celebration by lighting up the diya (clay lamp) to symbolise the spread of light, happiness and knowledge. This was followed by a cultural appreciation of Indian dances and percussion instruments. It was an interactive session as student-athletes and staff were invited on stage to dance to the beats of an Indian song, and try their hand at playing a percussion instrument. With the smell of prata, curry and briyani filling the air, student-athletes and staff were treated to a full Indian fare at The Arena.

The entertaining performances and delicious food that afternoon was a reminder that we should continue to count our blessings that we live harmoniously in multicultural diversity, and that we should embrace cultural differences.
