Blazing To Podium Finishes

National School Games: Track and Field

Track and Field Academy’s student-athletes blazed to podium finishes at the National School Games (NSG). After an adrenalin-pumping and exciting month of track and field action, student-athletes amassed a total of 45 podium finishes during the month-long NSG season.

Secondary 4 student-athlete Huang Weijun is the top performer at NSG, raking in 4 gold medals – 2 in individual events and 2 in relay events. Huang Weijun sprinted to the finish line ahead of his competitors in the 100m and 200m, and clocked personal bests of 10.94s and 22.43s. Weijun managed an impressive timing of 10.94 seconds for his 100m final, which gave him a boost for his 200m, which he completed in 22.26 seconds, just moments ahead of the 2nd place winner, who clocked a time of 24.64 seconds. His winning streak continued in the 4 by 100m and 4 by 400m relay events. In the 4 by 400m relay event, Weijun’s competitor from Victoria School took the baton slightly earlier. However, the sprint king overtook his competitor in the first 100m bend, and never relented as he brought the gold home for Sports School in 3 minutes 31.47 seconds, a marginal 0.18s ahead of Victoria School (3:31.65).

With the relay wins, Sports School proved its domination in the relay events. In the 4x400m relay, it earned its 8th gold in a row for Sports School out of 11 tries since the school started, while it recorded its 10th win in the 4 by 100m relay event.

Lucas Fun Le Cong (Secondary 4) was also part of the winning relay teams. Lucas showed multi-event versatility as he leapt to the top spot for long jump, and second place for high jump. Their teammate in the winning quartet and batchmate Edsel Poh also finished the NSG with 3 medals – 2 golds and 1 silver. He is the champion for 400m hurdles and silver medallist for 110 hurdles.

Mohamad Afzal Mohamad Zin (Secondary 5) led a 1-2-3 podium finish for Sports School, with Edsel and Abdul Raqib Abdul Razak (Secondary 4) standing proudly beside him during the medal presentation.

Among the girls, Secondary 4 student-athlete Laavinia Jaiganth put up an impressive performance, completing her NSG outing with 3 golds and 1 silver. Laavinia Jaiganth, claimed victory in a tightly-fought 800m final, stopping the clock at 2:30.79. In the 400m race, Laavinia and her batchmate Audrey Koh Shun Yi led a 1-2 finish, with Laavinia edging out Audrey by just 0.02 seconds to clinch the 1st place. The both of them were part of the golden team that included Neo En Yu (Secondary 3) and Marsya Syazwani Mohd Adzhar (Secondary 4) that completed the four-lap relay comfortably, about 6 seconds ahead of their nearest challengers CHIJ St.Nicholas Girls School and Raffles Girls’ School. Audrey was also decorated with a gold medal after leaping to 1st place in the 400m hurdles event in 1:10.64 minutes.

For their outstanding performance, the ’B’ Division Boys and Girls were ranked overall third at the end of the competition.

Though the ‘A’ Division competitors comprised of just six student-athletes who stretched their limits in various events, they won several medals, and finished 4th on the leaderboard. The most decorated student-athlete among them was Tong Yan Yee (IBDP Year 5), who stood at the podium four times and collected medals of each colour. Yan Yee ran to a gold-medal finish in the 400m race and settled for 2nd place in the 400m hurdles. She also played an important role in leading the 4 by 100m and 4 by 400m relay teams to a bronze and silver-medal finish.

The ‘C’ Division team relished the experience at their first NSG since they joined Sports School. Luisa Marie Vaz (Secondary 2) shone on the track and collected the most medals. The rising star came in 4th in the 100m race and 4x100m relay events. She also took home a silver medal for her sprint in the 200m race.
