Martina Is 2018's Best Sportswoman

2019 Singapore Sports Awards

It’s the battle of the heavyweights at the 2019 Singapore Sports Awards. In the Sportsman of the Year event, we have a three-corner “fight”. In the Red Corner... Three-time Pencak Silat World Champion and Singapore Sports School alumnus Sheik Farhan Sheik Alau'ddin, winning his third world title in 2018. In the Blue Corner... Jakarta-Palembang 2018 Asian Games double gold medallist, with a new Asian Games record, swimmer Joseph Schooling. And in the Orange Corner... Double gold medallist at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, table tennis veteran Gao Ning.

Joseph defeated his rivals, Farhan and Gao Ning, to lift the title of Sportsman of the Year for the sixth time at the Singapore Sports Awards presentation ceremony on 14 May 2019.

Among the 12 awards that Singapore National Olympic Council and Sport Singapore presented to celebrate and recognise the achievements of the nation's top sportsmen, Sports School present and past student-athletes were strong contenders in five categories.

Martina Lindsay P Veloso, Singapore’s top performer at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games with 2 individual gold medals, was crowned Sportswoman of the Year. The Sports School alumna beat former Sports School student-athlete Roanne Ho Ru’En (Swimming) and compatriots Nurzuhairah Mohammad Yazid (Pencak Silat) and Vera Tan Yan Ning (Wushu) to the coveted award.

The Sportsgirl of the Year Award went to Constance Lien Tian-En, a Swimming Academy alumna, who won Singapore’s first Ju-Jitsu Women’s Under 62kg silver medal at the Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games. It was the sport’s debut at the Asian Games. Indoor skydiver Choo Yi Xuan, also formerly a swimmer, was named Sportsboy/Sportsgirl Team of the Year (Event) with partner Kyra Poh for their gold-medal win at the 2018 FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving.

Present and past student-athletes received 57 awards in total, which include Meritorious Awards for individual and team in the senior and junior categories.
