Sports School Offers Athlete-Friendly Business Diploma

Singapore Sports School-Ngee Ann Polytechnic MOU

Posted: 17 May 2016

The first batch of post-secondary student-athletes on Singapore Sports School’s through-train pathway to a diploma in business studies will commence their studies in January 2017. The athlete-friendly pathway is the third of such options available at Sports School that allow student-athletes to progress to a post-secondary academic programme while bypassing the GCE “O” Level Examinations.

Sports School signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) on 17 May 2016 to offer the customised Diploma in Business Studies (Entrepreneurship Management Option) (BS-EMGT) to student-athletes after their secondary school education. The partnership stems from the recommendation of the Singapore Sports School Review that Sports School should offer its student-athletes additional 6+ year academic through-train pathways and support their sport development.

The BS-EMGT is a new business studies diploma customised by NP’s School of Business and Accountancy (BA) to suit the academic needs of high-performance student-athletes. The programme caters to up to 25 youth athletes with an interest in a business-related course.

The programme will be conducted by BA – a leading provider of business studies diploma programmes – at the Sports School campus. Through the programme, student-athletes will be equipped for work in an array of business sectors such as banking, finance, retailing, service operations, and hospitality and tourism. Yet, flexible and athlete-friendly academic arrangements such as a customised timetable, modular lesson design and provisions for Leave of Absence will support the demanding training and competition schedules required in grooming future champions for Singapore. These are among the few unique features that the BS-EMGT offers.
