27 Student-Athletes, Alumni In spexScholarship List

spexScholarship

Singapore Sports School alumnae Debbie Soh Li Fei and Miya Yong Hsing are part of eight new athletes who will receive the coveted Sports Excellence Scholarship, known as spexScholarship in short. The spexScholarship assists athletes in their education, career and personal development with financial and programmatic support to enable them to do well in major Games such as Asian and World-level competitions.

This year, a total of 76 athletes across 20 sports received a boost through the spexScholarship. Out of the recipients, 27 are past and present student-athletes from Sports School. That makes up more than 30% of the total number of recipients. Some current student-athletes who made it to the list of scholars yet again are Jaslyn Hooi Yue Yann (Badminton, Extended DBS), Maximillian Ang Wei (Swimming, Extended DSLM), Reuben Rainer Lee Siong En (Track and Field, DBS Year 3) and Siti Khadijah Mohamad Shahrem (Pencak Silat, DSPM Year 3).

Debbie and Miya, the nation’s top artistic swimming duo, would be the first artistic swimmers to be included in the list of spexScholarship recipients. Debbie, a 5-time gold medallist at the Southeast Asian Games said, “I feel extremely grateful to be receiving the spexScholarship, and that we're finally having more recognition and support after all our years in the sport,” Debbie said.

“Miya and I are trying to create history by being the first Singaporeans (and Southeast Asians) to qualify for the Olympic Games. Being backed by this scholarship really gives us more confidence to just go out and compete, and strive to achieve our goals. I hope receiving the scholarship will also inspire younger generations of Singapore artistic swimmers to dare to dream and not limit themselves to what's within their comfort zone.”

Besides Debbie and Miya, another new recipient of the award is Pencak Silat exponent Sheik Farhan Sheik Alau’ddin. An alumnus from Sports School, the three-time world champion in Men’s Match Class J has a whole list of accolades under his belt that prove that he is a deserving candidate for the scholarship.

New spexScholars were thoroughly assessed and selected based on their existing performance and their potential to win medals.
