Ho Xiu Yi Awarded SMU Yip Pin Xiu Scholarship

Yip Pin Xiu Scholarship

National shooter Ho Xiu Yi has set targets for herself as she starts a new chapter in her life. She will be pursuing her degree studies at Singapore Management University (SMU) in August with the determination to excel, enthusiasm to learn, and the Yip Pin Xiu Scholarship.

The Yip Pin Xiu Scholarship is SMU’s first full sports scholarship that honours excellence in sports and values that five-time Paralympic gold medallist and SMU alumna Yip Pin Xiu stands for. Besides her sports achievements, Pin Xiu demonstrated hard work, resilience, dedication and humility at the highest levels – qualities that Xiu Yi has shown as an athlete and a student. The recipient of the Scholarship should have excelled in sports at an international level and have potential and plans to continue representing Singapore.

Xiu Yi's most impressive sporting achievements include winning a team bronze medal at World Cup Cairo 2022, an individual silver medal at the 2019 SEA Games, and breaking the national record in 10m Air Rifle in 2016, 2018, and 2019.

She graduated from Singapore Sports School in 2020 after completing her International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and took a gap year to focus on her sporting development. Even beyond graduation from University, Xiu Yi would like to continue the sport while working. Xiu Yi hopes to qualify for the Asian Games and the next Olympic Games in Paris in two years.

Armed with the full sports scholarship, Xiu Yi is all set to take on her social sciences degree in Politics, Law and Economics while she continues pursuing her sporting goals.

“I am really grateful to be able to receive this Scholarship! This has been made possible as everyone in Sports School helped me excel in my sports and studies during my time there. The Scholarship definitely put down the financial burden of paying a student loan. Other than that, I look forward to receiving extra support from the school and working together to push for excellence in sports and studies, just like what I did in Sports School,” said Xiu Yi.

The bond-free Scholarship waives her tuition fees and provides her growth opportunities allowance to gain overseas exposure for her holistic development.

She is the third alumna to receive the Scholarship since it was established in 2017. Previous recipients of the Scholarship were sprint queen Veronica Shanti Pereira and artistic gymnast Miya Yong Hsing.
