Sports School Shuttlers Dominated At National Open
Singapore Sports Hub National Open Championships 2022
The Singapore Sports Hub National Open Championships saw a strong dominance by Singapore Sports School shuttlers. Past and present student-athletes frequented the podium in all Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles events, particularly the Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles where Sports School student-athletes and alumni took the top three positions in all the events.
The newly minted Women’s Singles National Champion, Nur Insyirah Khan Abdul Hamid Khan (Extended Diploma in Business Studies), was a first-time winner of the tournament. Despite a shaky start, the second seed beat alumna Lim Ming Hui 16-21, 21-11, 21-14 in the final. Ming Hui had defeated Megan Lee Xinyi (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 1) 24-22 21-18 in a close fight, with both eventually taking the second and joint third position respectively.
“Winning this is like a stepping stone for me to regain my momentum after not competing for a long time. This is also motivation for me to perform better in my next competitions,” said a satisfied Insyirah in a Straits Times interview.
The tournament was also a good learning experience for Megan who had also won a bronze in the Women’s doubles with Elsa Lai Yi Ting (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 1). She said: “Through this competition, I was able to identify areas which I need to improve on, and I hope to do better in my upcoming competitions.”
The other shuttler who had punched above her weight is alumna Crystal Wong Jia Ying. She won her second Women’s Doubles title, and a gold medal in the Mixed Doubles. In the Women’s Doubles with partner Jin Yu Jia, the duo cruised to victory against Ming Hui and Bernice Lim Zhi Rui (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 4) with 21-8, 21-12.
In the Mixed Doubles, Crystal partnered Wesley Koh Eng Keat (Diploma in Sport Management, Year 3) and came from behind against Jason Wong Guang Liang (alumnus) and Bernice to win 21-23, 21-17, 21-14. Jason had also partnered Albert Saputra in the Men’s Doubles to clinch a gold medal.
Over the 7-day tournament held from 3 to 9 January, Sports School past and present student-athletes clinched a total of 13 medals – 4 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze. The tournament is a Tier 1 Singapore Badminton Association tournament with the highest ranking points under the National Ranking System.
