Silat Brings Home 5 Asian Crowns

2019 Asian Pencak Silat Championship


Singapore Sports School pencak silat student-athletes and alumni struck gold in their final competition of 2019, winning 5 titles for Singapore at the 5th Asian Pencak Silat Championship.

Three-time world champion Sheik Farhan Sheik Alau'ddin cruised to the Men’s Match Class “J” final where he met Nguyen Van Tri, the Jakarta-Palembang 2018 Asian Games Class gold medallist in the same class. Farhan defeated his Vietnamese opponent with a convincing scoreline of 5-0 to clinch the gold medal. The Singaporean exponent was also named best male athlete of the Championship.

Fellow world champions Muhammad Iqbal Abdul Rahman (Men’s Artistic Singles), Nurul Suhaila Mohamed Saiful (Women’s Match Class “D”) also claimed their places at the top of the podium in their respective events. Iqbal won a second gold in the Men’s Artistic Team with post-secondary student-athlete Hamillatu Arash Juffrie (DSLM Year 4) and compatriot Muhammad Nazrul Mohd Kamal.

DSPM Year 2’s Siti Khadijah Mohamad Shahrem, a 2018 Asian Games bronze medallist, emerged victorious after a hard fight against Vietnamese Le Thi Van Anh in the final to capture Women’s Match Class “C” title. The match ended at 3-2 in favour of the Sports School post-secondary exponent.

Sports School’s exponents brought home another 1 silver and 4 bronze medals from the Championship in Yanji, China from 26 to 30 December 2019. They contributed 10 medals to Singapore’s total tally of 16 medals – 7 golds, 2 silvers and 7 bronzes.
