Fencers Win Nine Medals At Senior Championships

2022 Senior Championships

Senior fencers concluded the series of national fencing competition with 9 medals – 2 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals – at the 2022 Senior Championships held on 19 and 20 February 2022.

Singapore Sports School’s fencers won every medal colour in the Men’s Sabre event. Chan Phu Xien (Alumnus), Dan Wei Zuo (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 2) and Isaac Ong Shao En (Secondary 5) took the 1-2-3 placing. The Tan Howe Liang Excellence Award recipient, Phu Xien, and Wei Zuo also went head-on at the last Singapore Senior Challenge and finished with the same final result. This time, Secondary 5 student-athlete Isaac Ong joined the medallist list. He said, “When I started the competition against James, I thought there was no hope. But I surprised myself. Coming in 3rd for the Senior Championship was really eye-opening as it showed me what I am capable of and that hard work pays off. I am really happy and grateful to my coach.”

Another student-athlete pleased with her performance is Filzah Hidayah Nor Anuar (Diploma in Business, Year 1). She said, “I feel relieved that all the tough training for the past year since I started the polytechnic programme have helped me to achieve this medal. I do not regret choosing the polytechnic programme instead of the O-Level route as I can see good results in my sports performance. During the preparation towards the national competitions, I learnt that I am more resilient in training than I think I am. And with that resilience, I am looking forward to getting better results, winning more medals and being consistent.”

Foilist Cheung Kemei also finished with a gold medal. This is her third gold medal within a month as Kemei took the top spot at the 2022 Singapore Senior Challenge on 28 January. Her gold-medal finish on 28 January put on her on the list of SEA Games representatives. “I feel very happy and grateful to win and qualify for SEA Games, and I hope to make Singapore proud at the SEA Games,” expressed Kemei.

Kemei is one of the 11 past and present student-athletes who will be representing Singapore at the upcoming SEA Games. The national competitions have given them a good chance to earn a spot at the regional competition as it takes into consideration the four best scores obtained by the fencer from 2020 to 2021, and the 2022 Singapore Senior Challenge.
