All-Bronze For Swimmers At SEA Age

44th South East Asia Age Group Swimming Championships 2022

14 swimmers made a successful outing at the 44th South East Asia Age Group Swimming Championships 2022 where they competed against top swimmers from the region including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, and Brunei. Over the 3-day competition held from 17 to 19 December in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, our swimmers took home a total of 5 bronze medals, and achieved 17 personal best timings. Secondary 2 swimmer, Aaron Jonathan Ang, stood up strong in the Boys’ 13 & Under 200m Individual Medley, sweeping past his competitors to touch the wall with a personal best timing of 2:19.53s in the finals. This won him a bronze medal in the event.

“My performance at the competition was both good and bad. On the first day, I swam my best, clocking a new Personal Best timing of 2:19.53s, and brought back home a bronze medal. I fell ill on the second day of the competition, but it didn’t stop me from finishing my event. Unfortunately, it has also caused me to underperform in the 400m Individual Medley event,” shared Aaron.

He added: “Overall, it was an eye-opening experience for me, as I met many swimmers from other Southeast Asian countries. After seeing them swim, I was so excited for the race, and much more motivated to win. A lesson that I took home was: "Never give up. Setbacks are just like the stairs, sometimes you may trip and fall but in order to get to where you want to be, you have to stand up and keep climbing." "I will be back stronger!” he said.

The other four bronze medals came from the team events. Kayley Goh Shi En and Har Mint were part of the Singapore Team that clinched the bronze medal in the Girls’ 4x100m Freestyle Relay. Together with Lim Wan Ting, they went on to win another bronze in the 4x200m Freestyle Relay. The last two bronze medals were contributed by Lim Cheng Yu and Claire Chua who were part of the Boys’ and Mixed 4x200m Freestyle Relay teams respectively.
