Shuttlers’ Bountiful Harvest at Tournaments

Papago Youth Group 2021
Alpha Age Group Series (Dec) 2021

Our young shuttlers took the stage to shine at the Papago Youth Group 2021 and Alpha Age Group Series (Dec) 2021.

At the Papago Youth Group 2021 where Principal Ong Kim Soon was the Guest-of-Honour, our shuttlers scored a solid win on home ground. In all 17 finals our student-athletes had participated in, they clinched 12 out of the 17 gold medals on offer.

Student-athletes showed their strong dominance, especially in the U19 Boys’ and Girls’, and the Men’s and Women’s categories where they swept all Singles and Doubles titles. In the U15 and U17 categories, our shuttlers had done just as well, clinching a total of 4 gold medals by Justin Tay Ron Hsien in the U15 Boys’ Singles, Mark Wong Kai Ji in the U17 Boys’ Singles, Julian Ho Yu Feng / Nicholas Kat Zi Shun in the U17 Boys’ Doubles, and Lai Yi Ting / Heng Xiao En in the U17 Girls’ Doubles. To top it off, Coach Shinta Mulia Sari also won the Mixed Doubles title.

Altogether, the Badminton Academy brought home a total of 13 gold, 9 silver and 13 bronze medals from the six-day tournament held from 6 to 12 December 2021.

Meanwhile, at the Alpha Age Group Series (Dec) 2021, the other badminton tournament that was also sanctioned by Singapore Badminton Association Federation, student-athletes captured a total of 19 medals – 3 gold, 5 silver and 11 bronze. The gold medals are contributed by Mark Wong Kai Ji and Nge Joo Jin in the U17 Boys’ Doubles. Joo Jin had also contributed a gold in the U19 Boys’ Doubles with Johann Projogo. The last gold was by Megan Lee Xinyi who took the U19 Girls’ Singles title.

“I am satisfied with my performance at the Papago Youth Group 2021 as I was able to put up a good fight with bigger and taller players. I was also able to incorporate what I practiced during training and I felt I was mentally and physically well-prepared for the competition,” shared Aaliyah Zakaria who won a silver in the U15 Girls’ Singles.

However, the Secondary 3 student-athlete thought she could have done better at the Alpha Age Group Series (Dec) 2021 where she won a bronze in the U15 Girls’ Singles. She said: “It was nerve-wrecking as I had not played in that hall before. I was unable to calm myself down and reduce the number of unforced errors in my match. However, the loss only made me want to train harder and push myself more.”

The competition was held at Tanglin Trust School from 18 to 24 December.
