Pencak Silat Exponents Display Strong Fighting Spirit

31st SEA Games 2022 Trials & 19th World Pencak Silat Championship 2022 Trials

Seven Pencak Silat exponents traveled out of the country after nearly two years for the 31st SEA Games 2022 Trials & 19th World Pencak Silat Championship 2022 Trials. Held in Kuala Lumpur from 17 to 24 December 2021, the friendly trial was officially endorsed and sanctioned by the International Pencak Silat Federation (PERSILAT), to conduct a test run on the updated rules and regulations for international pencak silat competitions.

The seven of them marked their return to pencak silat action with winning performances against their Malaysian opponents. Third-year Diploma in Sport Management student-athlete Abdul Raazaq Abdul Rashid, and first-year Diploma in Business student-athlete, Nadhrah Sahrin, surprised by winning former SEA Games gold medallists. 2018 Asian Games and 2018 World Pencak Silat Championship bronze medallist Siti Khadijah Mohd Shahrem (Diploma in Sport Management Year 3), Aniq 'Asri Mohammad Yazid (Secondary 5) and Muhammad Naufal Abdullah (Secondary 4) won comfortably with a large margin in the scoreline against their opponents.

Muhammad Naufal Abdullah shared, “It was such a great experience for me as I got to try out different and new techniques which were pretty challenging. I felt that the trial helped me to understand that the age of your opponents does not matter and you can do well if you try. In general, everybody did their absolute best during the trip.”

Abdul Raazaq Abdul Rashid also relished the experience. He reflected: “I feel that the daily double training sessions, which consists of Uncle Sheik’s (Singapore Silat Federation’s CEO and former world champion, Dr Sheik Alau’ddin) gym training in the afternoon and skill training during the evening, benefitted me a lot as I have been trained physically and mentally to adapt to the new rulings in Pencak Silat.

I felt satisfied as it is a back-to-back win for this year’s tournaments (Rising to Greatness & Malaysia Trials). But I know that I must not slack the slightest bit as there are other tough exponents from other countries in my class.

I hope to learn and practice more of the new techniques and gain more knowledge from my coaches and teammates. I also hope to keep humble and look forward to the upcoming trials and Games for 2022.”
