Alumni Named Sportsman and Sportsgirl of the Year
Singapore Sports Awards 2023
On 23 August 2023, Singapore’s athletes were celebrated and honoured for their sporting achievements and performance in 2022 at the annual Singapore Sports Awards. The evening, which saw several past and present talents receive recognition for their good performance at competitions in 2022, ended on a high as alumni received top accolades.
Sheik Farhan Sheik Alau’ddin who bagged his fourth World Championship title and a gold medal at the 31st Southeast Asian Games in 2022 was honoured as the Sportsman of the Year. Sheik Farhan is the first pencak silat exponent who has won the top honours at the Singapore Sports Awards. Previously, he received the Sportsboy of the Year award in 2017.
In an interview with The Straits Times, he shared: “I feel good that I am recognised for my achievements, but I think it is important because it has also (showed recognition) to my sport…So just try to focus on continuing to win gold for Singapore and then everything else that comes will come.”
Bowler Colleen Pee received the Sportsgirl of the Year award for the first time for her stunning four gold-medal wins at the IBF U21 World Championships in 2022. Colleen also won the Sportsgirl Team of the Year (Event) award for winning the Women’s Doubles at the U21 World Championships. At the event, shuttler Terry Hee and Jessica Tan also received the Team of the Year award for their historic gold medal win at the 22nd Commonwealth Games.
Several other past and present student-athletes were nominated for top accolades, including Loh Kean Yew (Badminton) for Sportsman of the Year; Siti Khadijah Mohamad Shahrem (Pencak Silat) for Sportswoman of the Year; Max Lee Shen Oon (Diving) and Aniq ‘Asri Mohammad Yazid (Pencak Silat) for Sportsboy of the Year; and Kassandra Ong Xue Ling (Wushu) and Nadhrah Sahrin (Pencak Silat) for Sportsgirl of the Year.
