History was made on 17 April 2024 when the all-Sports School ‘B’ Division Water Polo team beat ACS Barker 9-5 in the National School Games (NSG) Water Polo finals at Our Tampines Hub. It was the first time that Sports School, which takes in student-athletes in water polo under its Individual Programme, had won the NSG title in water polo.

The 9-man team comprising Matthias Zoltan Goh, Merrill Hwang, Javier Ng, Rhys Vaswani, Chow Yong Jun, Jaylen Yeo, Tan Wu Yee, Isaiah Patrick, and Koh Kai Jie, displayed exceptional skills and teamwork, with an impressive record of 8 wins and 2 draws leading to the finals.

After a tight start, Rhys started accounts by slotting past the Barker goalie on 3 minutes, and captain Matthias duly followed up with a penalty to end the first quarter up 2-0. A quick-fire burst of 4 more goals from Matthias brought half-time to a 6-0 close.

Sports School suffered some nerves as ACS Barker got back into the game by bringing it to 6-2. Roared on by the raucous supporters, Matthias made it 7-2 on 3 minutes in the 3rd quarter. A penalty brought the 3rd quarter to a close at 7-3.

Matthias calmed nerves with a lobbed goal at the beginning of the 4th quarter. 2 quick goals from Barker’s centre brought the score back to 8-5 to set up a tense finish. Serbian-based Yong Jun scored with 2 minutes left to win the game 9-5, creating history for Sports School.

Golf

Our golfers set off for their final day of the National School Games with excitement, but the inclement weather dampened their spirits. They could not play the final rounds of the closing day. Yet, Team Sports School claimed the ‘A’ Division Girls and Boys titles, and ‘B’ Division Girls title and Team Champions trophy.

For sisters Jaymie Ng Wan Xin and Denise Ng Wan Xuan who were neck and neck after the ‘A’ Division opening round, the second day of play was crucial. It was the first time that the sisters were in contention for the title. However, the lightning alert system was activated, and winners were determined on countback. The 18th hole was determined as the tie-breaker, as the sisters shared the same cumulative score for most of the play. Denise had bogeyed the 18th hole when she missed a two-foot putt.

Ultimately, it was a 1-2-3 finish for our post-secondary student-athletes in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, with Jaymie retaining her ‘A’ Division title for the third time. Denise Ng took the 2nd place and Jillian Kuk came in 3rd.

IBDP Year 5 golfer Aaron Wee Zheng Kai claimed the ‘A’ Division Boys NSG title on countback as well.

In ‘B’ Division, Chen Xingtong took the title while schoolmate Chloe Ng Ker Ee came in 2nd. Their wins contributed to Sports School winning the Team Champions trophy.

Passion Hsu Le Ting, who was in the ‘C’ Division Girls team, also had a podium finish, placing 3rd in the competition. Her teammate and Secondary 1 golfer, who represented Sports School for the first time, had a commendable 5th-place finish.

Gymnastics

After a nervy, error-filled first day, Leia Yap held her head high to finish strong at the National School Games Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship held from 17-18 April 2024. She collected medals for her efforts in 3 apparatus, including a gold medal for her Ribbon routine on the final day of competition. It was a fine display of determination to walk away with 3rd place in the overall title.

In artistic gymnastics, ‘C’ Division Boys Aiken Tang and Jonah Loh swept up all available medals as the only competitors in the division. In the ‘B’ Division Boys, Jayden Han collected medals across all his events, including a 4th place in the Individual All-around.

Also, Secondary 2 diver Tyler Lee Dee Oon took up the challenge to participate in the ‘C’ Division of Trampoline Gymnastics. He showcased his diverse talents and versatility by winning a silver medal in the competition.

Wushu exponents collected 4 golds and 1 silver from the National School Games (NSG) Wushu Championships. Nessya Koh defended her gold medals once again in the 1st International Changquan, Broadsword and Cudgel events. In her final NSG, Jolie Goh put on a fine display of poise in her Taiji events, while Secondary 2 shooter Xuan Ilyas showcased his multi-talents participating in the ‘C’ Division Boys Changquan event.
