spexScholars Receive Boost In Sport And In Life

When Reuben Rainer Lee Siong En (Extended Diploma in Business Studies) put his mind to the upcoming SEA Games, he knew he could do it with peace of mind under the support of the spexScholarship, an enhanced support provided to high-performing athletes to excel at the Major Games at Asian and World levels.

With this Scholarship, the go-getter aiming to be the first Singaporean to run under 21 seconds in 200m, and to qualify for the Olympics by merit, can receive both financial and programmatic support to prepare him for the Games. “Besides monthly stipend, I have access to sports treatments such as complimentary sport massage and therapy, which has helped my recovery after training,” shared Reuben.

“In addition, I can get equipment and gears such as different pairs of spikes for training and competitions. I also get support for my overseas training camp and competitions. Being well-equipped for my training and given more opportunities to compete overseas allows me to bring my sports to the next level,” said a grateful Reuben, who is motivated to train even harder and more professionally.

Paddler Izaac Quek Yong (Secondary 4) and swimmer Maximillian Ang Wei (extended Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management) are just as grateful and honoured to receive the Scholarship.

“I will be receiving support in various ways such as getting help for my recovery. I also get some help to cover the cost of transport, food, as well as my daily activities. The Scholarship gives me more motivation to do well and inspire others. I am always more than happy to represent my country and make everyone proud,” said Maximillian, who is gunning for multiple gold medals at the upcoming SEA Games.

“Getting this Scholarship was definitely not expected. I am really grateful to be given the Scholarship and very happy that my achievements are recognised. I will continue to work hard and do my best for upcoming competitions,” said Izaac, who is looking to medal in the upcoming Asian and Commonwealth Games.

The spexScholarship has also provided a purpose for Siti Khadijah Mohamad Shahrem (Extended Diploma in Sports Management) who will be representing Singapore at the 31st SEA Games. “With this scholarship, I am able to have access to Singapore Sports Institute’s support where the team will help plan my progression, and help me achieve greater heights as an athlete. Besides that, I also will receive financial support so I can give all my focus on my sport and achieve my goals,” shared Siti.

31 past and present student-athletes were awarded the spexScholarship in 2022. Besides developing the athletes’ sporting potential, the spexScholarship will also assist them in their education, career, and personal development.
