10 Championship Titles And Counting

2019 National School Games

The 2019 National School Games season for school athletes began on 23 January 2019. Competition kicked off with the zonal rounds for several sports, while others headed straight into the national round. Singapore Sports School student-athletes from Badminton, Fencing, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Netball, Shooting, Taekwondo, Track and Field, and Wushu put their skills and abilities to the test in the national stage. They added eight Overall Championship titles to the two earlier captured by Bowling Academy’s “B” Division student-athletes on 5 March 2019.

Badminton

Sports School’s “B” and “C” Division badminton players defeated 28 schools to book their spot in the Finals on 16 April 2019 where they will meet Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) (“B” Boys), Raffles Institution (“C” Boys) and Raffles Girls’ School (“B” and “C” Girls). Student-athletes cruised through the preliminary rounds to progress into the Semi-Finals where they met Raffles Institution (“B” Boys), Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) (“C” Boys) and Dunman High School (“B” and “C” Girls).

Fencing

Fencing Academy student-athletes lunged to three Championship titles in the “B” Boys and Girls, and “C” Girls Divisions. The “C” Boys finished overall Runner-Up. They clinched 8 gold, 6 silver and 12 bronze medals across three weapon groups from 25 and 27 March.

Sports School fencers also surpassed expectations in the “A” Division from 28 to 29 March. The “A” Girls team, comprising five student-athletes, won for Sports School the Overall Championship 3rd place trophy. Along with two fencers in the Boys category, they secured 2 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze medals.

Football

By the end of the first half of the Semi-Finals on 8 April, Sports School’s “B” Division footballers were two goals down against Jurongville Secondary School. The team banded together in attack and defence, coming back stronger in the second half. Secondary 4’s Ong Yu En scored all of Sports School’s two goals in the game which ended at 2-3 in favour of rivals Jurongville Secondary. The Sports School team proceeded into the bronze-medal match against Serangoon Garden Secondary School which concluded with a 4-1 victory on 15 April.

Football Academy’s “B” Division student-athletes had triumphed in their earlier three matches in the first round of the League 1 Championships to advance into the knockout rounds where they recorded a clean sheet in the Quarter-Finals against Bedok South Secondary School.

Golf

Post-secondary golfers Eng Wei Jin and Jason Kuk Jian Jie were crowned the "A" Division Overall Team champions after three days of competition from 8 to 10 April, ending the gold drought for Sports School. The pair recorded a combined 148 strokes on 10 April for the Team gold medal and Overall Boys "A" Division trophy.

In the Individual event from 8 to 9 April, Jason shot a two-day total of 145 strokes (75, 70) for the bronze medal, while Wei Jin finished three strokes behind in fourth place.

Gymnastics

Despite being two years younger than some of his competitors, Kho Tong-Yu delivered strong performances to win the Individual All-Around silver medal in the Boys "B" Division on 5 April. The 13-year-old Secondary 2 artistic gymnast bagged 4 silver and 2 bronze medals in the individual apparatus to stand second-highest on the podium in the IAA.

Netball

Sports School’s “B” Division netballers are progressing well in the National School Netball Championships having won all three matches in the first round group-stage to advance to the Quarter-Finals. The team was successful in their first of three games in the Quarter-Finals and have two games remaining before the Semi-Finals. Both the Round 1 and Quarter-Final stages are played in the round-robin format.

Shooting

Sports School’s shooters affirmed themselves as best school shooters when they clinched 9 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medals in the “A” and “B” Divisions from 1 to 12 April. Student-athletes won 4 Championship titles for Sports School – the Air Rifle “A” Girls, “B” Boys and Girls; Air Pistol “B” Girls.

Adele Tan Qian Xiu from the Extended International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and Secondary 3’s Tang Hong An were the Shooting Academy’s top performers, bagging 2 golds in the Individual and Team events.

Taekwondo

Brandon Low Sze Sheng executed a kicks, punches and blocks with a perfect balance of control and strength to win the Boys "B" Division Individual Poomsae gold medal on 10 April. The Secondary 4 taekwondo exponent beat 42 others to the coveted title.

Track and Field

Diane Hilary Pragasam made a clean sweep of the Girls 400m event at the National Schools Track and Field Championships – winning the gold medal for the sixth time on 15 March 2019. The IBDP Year 6 student-athlete finished a stride ahead of her nearest challenger in the “A” Division race, in 1:01.00s. Secondary 2’s Cheyenne Lim Hwee Suan, a Netball Academy student-athlete, surprised the field by crossing the line first in the “C” Division 1,500m.

Ten days later, IBDP Year 5 student-athlete Andrew George Medina leapt past a 17-year-old record of 14.55m on his second of six jumps. His 14.58m-effort, despite a 2-hour rain delay, landed him the Boys "A" Division Triple Jump Championships Record, as well as gold medal for that event.

Track and Field student-athletes showed great teamwork on the final day of the Championships, finishing strongly with 6 gold and 3 silver medals in the 4x100m and 4x400m Relays. Netballers Cheyenne and Rishika Ghanamoorthy were instrumental to the gold medals won in the “C” Girls 4x400m and “A” Girls 4x100m Relays respectively. Track and Field Academy concluded the meet with a total tally of 16 golds, 12 silvers, 9 bronzes and 11 4th-place finishes from 8 to 29 March.

Wushu

Sisters Kassandra Ong Xue Ling and Kimberly Ong Li Ling were Sports School’s top performers in the Wushu competition from 3 to 12 April, each winning a hat trick of medals. Kassandra, in Secondary 1, and IBDP Year 5’s Kimberly showed their prowess in the Individual Changquan, Daoshu and Gunshu events in the “C” and “A” Divisions.

Meanwhile, Secondary 2 student-athlete Jolie Goh clinched 2 gold medals in the Taijijian and Taijiquan events.
